I
have used Marvelous Math for my five children since my oldest, now 20,
was very young. Without the mastery of basic math facts, it is impossible
for a child to enjoy his math program. Marvelous Math has given me a tool

such as ITBS, are not a problem because MM works on speed as well as

I have to admit, I
had my own children in tears with my first try at math software. (That was
back in the days of DOS based software!) Why did they feel like crying? It
certainly wasn't because of lack of desire on my part. I am a homeschool
dad (with classroom teaching experience) who just WANTED TO GET THE JOB
DONE! But the built-in periodic timed checkups often produced a burst of
tears from my own children. The high standards for performance were good
but the emotional down time was bad! That first attempt at math software

wonderful kids. Even with my mistaken first attempt I still preferred to
support them through the tearful moments on the computer over the
alternative: having them in tears while sitting at their desk staring
blankly at their math workbooks. How frustrated would they have been if
they didn't know their math facts (seven plus five -- nine times seven
etc)? How would they have felt when they CONSISTENTLY MISSED math problems?
How down-hearted would they have been if the clock ticked away the minutes
while they were SLOWLY, HELPLESSLY plodding along on their arithmetic pages
(perhaps still counting on their fingers) ?

I
created this software to get the job done! I'm a home-school dad and knew
that my wife and I didn't have time to spare to do the flashcards for our
children. I saw that one of the best uses for the computer was the
development of skill (which involves repetition). And computers ARE
patient! With our parental insistence (my dear wife passed away two years
ago) over the years our children have done their Marvelous Math
"turn" and have profited from it. Of course, for some of my own
children, math facts came easily. For others it was like climbing a
mountain. But THEY ALL NEEDED that semi-automatic or automatic response
when presented with a problem like "forty-two divided by six".
After checking out some
popular math software I realized that there are frustrated students who
have been allowed to play around instead of getting down to business. My
own teachers in school would insist that their students master the
flashcards. They even made a game out of it by letting one student move
around the room standing beside one desk at a time. The teacher would
display the flashcard and the student who got it right first was the one
who could move on to the next desk. The teacher controlled the
"game" and the focus was clearly on learning the math facts. In
contrast, the modern well-meaning parent/teacher may purchase some
edu-tainment software that gives the child "pick and choose" control
or distracts him with all the game components of the software. What could

won't be dogmatic here.) The student may learn some math facts but may soon
be bored by the lack of challenge and by his natural lack of
