Should
math drill be fun? Can it be
fun? Well, Marvelous Math for Windows doesn’t exactly make it fun, but it
does make it more enjoyable.
Written by a homeschooling father of six, you will find a
no-nonsense approach. No shoot’em-up games, no bells or whistles, and no
grand graphics, just drill with record keeping built in. All of your
children will have a printable record of their sessions…You see your
score at the end of each session, and try to beat previous high
scores. When the student
reaches 10 correct answers, the “car” (or “truck” etc.) changes to a
helicopter and “flies” back to the starting point, while a voice says,
“What a helicopter ride!” (Note: The congratulation sounds, which can get
irritating, may be turned off.)
Marvelous
Math automatically adjusts, up or down, to the best level for your
student. Select a starting level and adjustments will be made based upon
performance. Each time the
level increases; you are introduced to the new fact family.
Accuracy
and speed are the keys to high scores. You try to better you previous score, accuracy, and
speed for the month. When your session is finished, you may print a list
of the incorrect problems for review.
A
great plus: you can
customize problem types and even change the time limit, which is
originally set at 15 minutes.
Your custom session can allow students to concentrate on, for
example, multiplication by 8 (or 7, 8 and 9). Or the custom practice session can be set up as only
skip counting practice (examples: 3’s and above or just 6’s)
Some
other unique features of Marvelous Math:
- I
mentioned skip-counting.
This is one of the areas the program drills, although few
other math programs do so.
- Reinforcement
is built in. Marvelous Math always
reviews the student on the problem areas of his last session. If the student misses a
problem during this review, it is immediately presented to him again
(perhaps inverting the factors).
- Constant
review. Marvelous
Math doesn’t present one operation (addition, subtraction,
multiplication, or division) and then drop it and move on to the
next. Instead, it
cycles through the four operations. If the student started only with addition and
subtraction, it automatically begins multiplication and division at
an appropriate time. Thus the student keeps sharp in each operation.
- Advanced
Students. Clues are delayed for the advanced students and they
are presented with a greater number of problems in one operation
before cycling to another.
- To
12x12 and beyond! Marvelous Math allows advancement beyond the
12’s if desired. The
student is presented with a choice when he reaches that stage.
- A
fresh start each month.
Marvelous Math resets the Congratulations screen progress
markers at the beginning of each month. Thus is a student get into
more difficult work, he can still feel like he is doing well
competing against himself.

math drill without a lot of time-wasting Hollywood sideshows and without
